Upon being accepted
Who can I apply for?
All characters from fictional medias are accepted. Historical figures are accepted as long as they are from a fictional media, such as Shakespeare from Shakespeare in Love.
Who can't I apply for?
Historical figures, real people, gods from actual mythology, and personifications of real world countries or objects are not acceptable.
Can I apply for a character that's dead in their canon? Yes. When they arrive in the Underworld they'll have their life back completely. Think of it as a second chance.
Do you allow multiples(two of the same character)? Yes, we do. We allow one OU (original universe) character and one AU character (alternate universe).
What is the game's stance on AU's? For AU's we accept the following:
Canon AU's :: These are AU's that are from a particular canon. Such as the X-Men movies or the Ultimate X-Men line of comics. The female and male characters from Persona 3 and the Hawke's from Dragon Age II would also fall under this category. We would allow one OU version and one as an AU.
What about original characters or fandom OC's? We do accept both original characters (OC’s) and Fandom OC’s. Fandom OC’s may be from any medium where the player creates their own character, such as (but not limited to); Vampire: The Masquerade or World of Warcraft.
Do you accept application challenges? Yes, we do accept application challenges. This means that if someone has an application up for a character and you have one finished/almost finished and would like to apply for that same character, you're free to do so. We'll look at both applications and determine which one portrays the character best according to canon. This also means that if there is a reserve up for a character you can still put in an application for that character. Although, we won't look at your application and make a decision until the reserve application has come in.
What's the current character limit? The current starting limit is 6 characters. But if you've proven to be active and think you can handle more, you're free to request to add to that number!
You may also play no more than 2 from each canon unless you're coming from a canon similar to Marvel or DC. Then you're free to discuss it with a mod.
Can we reuse samples from another application? Yes, you may reuse samples if you want.
Can I transfer CR or Character Development from another roleplay? Yes, we simply require that you fill out the appropriate sections in the application.
What are the marks that my character receives when they arrive? As of March 2013 all characters entering the Underworld are marked with a letter that stands for something they're guilty of doing. The marks are carved into the body of the character once they step off the ferry, they will bleed for a short time (depending on how deep they are) and then will heal up leaving a scar for the duration of the character's stay in the Underworld. These marks can be as large or small as you want and they can be located anywhere on the body. The letter is up to you, the only pre-requisite is that it symbolizes something the character is guilty of doing that caused harm to other people either directly or indirectly. Anything can be used from the letter of one of the seven deadly sins ('W' for wrath or 'L' for lust) to something more specific ('K' for killer). It's completely up to you as the mun. We'd appreciate it if you'd include a brief explanation of why you chose the mark you did in the application!
Can the marks be hidden? Yes and no. Shapeshifting characters will keep their marks no matter what form they take. However, if characters have an ability that lets them change another character's perception, they can make other character's just not notice the marks on them. For instance a telepath could mask the marks or someone with the ability to cast illusions. It would take constant concentration on their part though and as such probably couldn't be maintained for too long!
Do characters keep their powers? What about items? Yes, characters will keep their full powers. Characters can also keep any items that they have on their person upon their arrival. So if you have Materia you get to keep it, swords, you get to keep it, and so on. They can also keep pets if they're with them at the time they're taken. This is limited to pets that could not be played as a character themselves.
What happens if my character dies in game? When a character dies their body disappears and they will find themselves six feet under the first death, in a wooden box that they'll have to make their way out of. Each death will put the character further and further down in the ground. The tablet will be with the character, but keep in mind the character is trapped in a small space, so posts should be kept realistic to that situation. The graves are marked with your character's name and the gravestone will stay there even after you've been dug up. Keep in mind that the graveyard is very large and crawling with zombies.
Each death will also come with a penalty. Characters that are living will become the living dead with everything that goes along with being undead (for example: no heartbeat, cold to the touch, no working organs, no need for food/sleep, and any powers they have that are tied to them being alive will be gone or dulled).
For undead characters (vampires or just undead) and robotic characters the death penalty is being brought to life and reverted to a living human state. For undead or vampires this means a loss of any of their powers that are directly tied to them being undead (for example any vampire powers that were granted upon their death and turn such as: super strength, drinking blood, the need for blood, super senses, or anything that they got as a result of their turn) or any powers that rely on them being undead to work. For robots/mechanical characters this would include any abilities they have that make them beyond human (super strength, speed, senses, sensors). If a character has any abilities that they had prior to being killed or turned into a machine they will keep those.
This time period will vary between 5 to 21 days. Along with that penalty characters will also lose ONE other thing, it can be either a memory, sense (such as sight or hearing), a power, an aspect of their personality, or something else, we leave that mostly up to the player within reason. You are required to contact a mod before you kill your character off so we can keep track of deaths and give you your randomly generated amount of time.
So, what's up with the cemetery and waking up there? Whenever a character dies, they will awaken later in a grave. This grave will be somewhere in the cemetery and marked with a simple headstone denoting the character's name. After they dig themselves out (or have someone help them along) this grave doesn't disappear and will forever remain in the same location as a reminder. If that character should happen to die again that's where they can be found the next time around, unless they die during an event in which it's described that characters don't end up in the cemetery upon death.
What if a character doesn't speak English? All people are given the ability to speak the same language, this happens without thought; it's as if suddenly everyone is speaking one common language. The actual language is a form of ancient Greek spoken in this realities version of Greece, so it's unique to the Underworld. If your character consciously thinks about speaking another language (or their native language) they will be able to speak in it and others (unless they also speak that language) will not be able to understand. It’s also possible that characters could slip into their native tongue if under a great amount of stress or pain.
I'd like to make a deal with Hecate for something, how do I go about doing that? The first step would be contacting us OOC so we can get the ball rolling. After that, we can discuss it and then work out a way for the characters to contact her IC. Usually this would be done in a dream, as that’s the easiest way for her to go unnoticed.
Deals can be made for just about anything (objects, memories, healing), however, there may be some cases where it's just impossible to get whatever it is. That's another reason we ask that you contact us OOC first, that way we can let you know if it's possible or not. There will also be a price for everything. The price depends greatly on how important/big the thing you're requesting is.
Can I update my character's canon point? Absolutely! Go here to read about canon updates! We only require three things from you in order to get a canon update: filling out the form on that page, taking your character out of game to go home for 24 hours, and letting the OOC community know. It's pretty simple!
How do people communicate? When they arrive in the Underworld they're given tablets. These tablets look similar to an ipad. As seen here. There's a pen attached to the tablet via a wire. The tablets can be used for audio, video, and text. It can also be used to share files, pictures, and entries and comments can be made private/locked if your character is capable of figuring out coding like that. The network lists a number associated with a specific tablet but not the actual name of the character it belongs to. As it does list a specific number for each tablet it's not possible to post anonymous. It is also not possible for modifications to be made to the tablet by it's users. If a character has a special need in regards to communication please contact us!
Is it possible to destroy the tablets? Nope, they're completely 100% indestructible.
How exactly does posting work? Similar to having a livejournal, your characters can post journal entries in the main community. These can be done in numerous ways: voice, text, and video are all acceptable.
All entries on the Network are archived and can be looked over by anyone at any point (unless the threads/entries are marked as private or filtered).
What do you mean by all posts must be tagged? We request that you tag your posts in the main community with your character's tag. Posts are tagged !fandom: character name and comments are tagged fandom: character name.
Please do this for each post you make and each post you comment on. This will make activity checks run much more smoothly.
Where do people live? Anywhere they want. There are little houses, flats above places that used to be shops, and big mansions.
Where does food come from? Basic necessities exist in the various homes, apartments, etc in which your characters are able to take up residence. Basic necessities include very simple first aid supplies (bandages, alcohol to clean wounds) and food items. The refrigerators and pantries come stocked with basic foods such as vegetables and rice and seem to never dwindle. It's probably best not to question where that food keeps coming from (spoiler: it’s Hecate).
Food can also be found in the market area. The market area is a section of the Underworld where there are stalls and inside shops where just about anything you can think of can be found. The stalls and the shops are run by random NPC's that live in the Underworld.
Is there a sun? Yes. The sun exists, as does the moon, and it mimics a day and night cycle. However, the sunlight does not come from a true sun; instead it comes from an artificially created one. What does this mean for characters that have abilities that rely on the sun? The sun is artificial, but it still will work to power those characters, however it will take longer for them to recharge if they’re injured/use a lot of their power. It also won’t feel quite the same to them; it’s colder and less powerful than a true sun. So, for example, if a character can usually replenish their powers in a few hours of sunbathing back home, here in the Underworld it might take them a few days to do so completely.
The sun does not effect vampires at all! Depending on your character's canon sensitivity to the sun it might be mildly uncomfortable, but nothing unbearable or that would cause any true damage.
Can I have my character open a business? Yes! We encourage people to start their own business! If you'd like to have a character open a business please go here and leave us a bit of information about the business so we can add it to the Locations page!
What type of currency is used in the Underworld? How does my character make money? The currency used in the underworld are non-descriptive coins. Money can be made in different ways, you're free to hand-wave employment by NPC's, or people can kill things and sell them, or make things. Or you can seek out employment with PC.
Are there NPC's in the city? Yes, there are NPC's in the Underworld. They're undead "natives" so to speak, though they do have blood and semi-functional organs. They go about their lives as if they're trapped forever thinking they're still alive in their time period conducting business. You can talk to them but they are very focused on simply completing their tasks and it's possible they might not even notice you're there. If a psychics attempt to read their minds they might get flashes of the life they lived, feel free to ask us if you'd ever like to do that. During events they may get fear or other things associated with the event.
My character is a vampire and needs blood to survive, how does that work? The NPC's can be used as a food source, they do have blood and functioning organs, but they will not provide a very hearty source of food as they are dead, so it would take more from them to fill your character up. Can players run plots? Absolutely! We want to encourage anyone to run plots, just contact the mods first to get things set up. If you plan on doing anything that could affect the Underworld in general (such as massive destruction of the setting or having a large gathering) please contact us first!
Was the game formerly Underworld Wars? Yes, yes we were. When we moved to Dreamwidth we decided to changed the game's name to better fit the theme of the game and the direction it was going in.
Our AC is pretty lenient, you must have a combination of TWO of the following:
While posts filtered solely to one or two people are acceptable to do, they DO NOT count towards activity check.
NOTE: All characters that were accepted during a given calendar month will be exempt from activity for that month. So, if you're accepted in January you don't have to do AC for January.
We do activity check for every player and post a list on the 1st of every month with a list of characters who have only half activity, and can thus reclaim, and those who have no activity and will be removed. You have three days to respond to this post to reclaim or to present any AC you feel we may have missed from your character!
A note: if you present activity after the check has gone up and its last minute activity you rushed to gather just for AC, and you have consistently been inactive, we reserve the right to not accept this as proof.
failing activity. If you can only provide one proof of activity, you will have the option to reclaim the character and provide double activity for the next month. If you fail to provide double activity for the next month, you will be dropped from the game.
If you cannot provide any piece of activity, your character will be auto-dropped from the game.
on being accepted. After being accepted to the game, you have One Week to post to the Taken page and to post an In Character introduction in the Main Community. If you don't, we do reserve the right to remove your character from the game. Please, if there are extenuating circumstances that prevent you from being able to meet the One Week requirements, let us know! We are willing to make exceptions.
A note: constantly barely meeting Activity will result in the mods contacting you. Our Activity is very lenient and character squatting like that isn't fair to anyone involved in the game. We'll contact you if we feel like this is getting to be a problem and give you one warning for the next Activity Check, if you don't go beyond the requirements for that Activity Check then you will be removed.
You're allowed to hiatus for up to two weeks without talking to a mod. If you think it's going to be more than that, please talk to us. It'll be determined on a case-by-case basis. If you submit a hiatus for longer than two weeks without speaking to us first, we will contact you about this.
If you take a hiatus for 2 weeks you are exempt from Activity Check. This can only be applied if you hiatus at least a week prior to Activity Check. The two weeks also must take place in one month, it cannot be spread out over two months. You must leave a comment for your hiatus here or your hiatus will not be counted.
